| Using an Excel pivot table:
|
- The pivot table on the Stats sheet is linked to
the race results listed on the Data sheet. Changes
made to the data are not reflected in the pivot
table until you select "! Refresh Data" using the
right-mouse-button (RMB) context menu. I only
mention this in case you spot errors in the data
and are wondering why, when you correct them, the
pivot table doesn't immediately reflect the
change.
- The "Type" selection lets you look at the results
for a particular type of race, either track or
cross country. Similarly, the "Event" and "Time"
fields let you look at the results for specific
events or dates. You can select combinations of all
of these, but it is possible to set impossible
conditions (e.g., Event=IYMOC and Type=X-country)
in which case no results will be shown. Think of
the Type, Event and Date as "filters" that let you
examine specific results.
- The "Athelete" and "Meters" selections also let
you look at the results for specific atheletes or
distances. This is handy for example if you want to
print the results only for a select group of
atheletes (for example, your own). It is a little
more tedious to restrict these selections since
there is not an "(all)" selection. But you can use
the up and down arrows and the space bar to toggle
each athelete (or distance).
- The data in the table is the minimum time for
each athelete for a particular distance. Select
"Field Settings" using the RMB context menu on the
"Min of Time" field (column A row 5) to change
this. For example, you could change this field
setting from "Min" to "Max" to see the worst times
for an athelete at each distance, or to "Average"
for an average time, or to "Count" to see how many
races have been run at that distance. One last
note: the data is formatted as a custom "mm:ss.00"
time, so viewing the "Count" will show "00:00.00".
You have to change the formatting (by selecting
Number on the Field Settings dialog and change the
cell format to "General" in order to see the
count.
- Lastly, don't worry about messing up the table;
simply exit without saving or download a new copy
and start over if necessary.
